First off, what is with the selection screens? I have to adjust my television objective to read the options! Anyway, several episodes here are up to the high standards of previous Family Guy seasons. My favorites are “PTV,” “The Corpulent Guy Strangler,” “Father, Son, and the Holy Fonz,” and “You May Now Kiss…” (Jasper is comical) . Others, however, I found to be mediocre or objective dead unpleasant (”Patriot Games”) . There are not as many episodes I want to search for over and over as there are on volumes 1-3, but this season is calm pleasant enough for 4 stars. There are a lot of extras on disc 3, too. 44 deleted scenes and you can assume all and have them play one after the other (some of these jokes are better than the ones that got left in the shows) . The featurettes are very sharp where many of the directors and artists are interviewed on what all is entailed in putting a point to together. Also, these episodes are uncensored (there is an F-Bomb dropped or two) but there is a censored option (isn’t it usually the other method around? ) . Anyway, here are the episodes:

Disc 1

“PTV”: A wardrobe malfunction curious David Hyde Pierce at the Emmys causes the FCC to censor all tv–”The `bleep’ Van `bleep’ Exhibit, Starring `bleep’ Van `bleep.’ So Peter starts his have network featuring such highbrow programs as “The Side-Boob Hour” and “Dogs Humping.”

“Brian Goes Abet to College”: The Fresh Yorker magazine is eager in Brian as a contributor but requires a college degree. Brian had dropped out of Brown University. It’s unfamiliar to reflect of an arresting dog in this map, but I’d always belief Brian was so frosty and together. Hearing him lament about how he never finishes anything set a current whisk on his character.

“The Courtship of Stewie’s Father”: Chris works for that disgusting primitive man who likes young boys while Stewie and Peter bond over something they both devour immensely: terrorizing Lois. This episode almost makes one sympathize with that faded pediaphile (well, almost) .

“The Chunky Guy Strangler”: My popular of this volume. Lois finds out she has a brother who went crazy after seeing their mother having relations with Jackie Gleason (hence his hatred of stout men) . Meanwhile, Peter makes the homely discovery that he is elephantine and starts the NAAFP.

“The Father, the Son and the Holy Fonz”: Peter’s father baptizes Stewie with deplorable holy water and he has to be quarantined in a plastic bubble. Meanwhile, Peter starts the church of the Fonz–”Please rise…..Now sit on it.”

Disc 2:

“Brian Sings and Swings”: A near-death experience causes Brian to feel he must live for the moment so he hooks up with Frank Sinatra Jr. as fragment of the Novel Rat Pack. A funnier side anecdote is Meg pretending to be a lesbian to be current into a club.

“Patriot Games”: This has to be the most stupidest Family Guy ever. Peter meets Tom Brady and joins the Current England Patriots (along side Diet Pepsi machine? ) but is transferred to a London team for showboating. Meanwhile, Brian fails to pay a debt and Stewie gives him a beat-down mob-style.

“I Retract Thee Quagmire”: Quagmire gets married and soon realizes it was a mistake. Meanwhile, Lois is weaning Stewie but he finds he is addicted to breast milk.

“Sibling Rivalry”: Peter donates to a sperm bank and Stewie’s rival baby is born (remember “Emission Impossible”? ) . Meanwhile, Peter stops having relations with Lois after his vasectomy and Lois gets elephantine. I like that fragment. Another highlight: Chris’s shoebox diarrhea of the evolution of man.

“Deep Throats”: After getting what he deemed to be an excessively high parking label, Brian wants to accept dirt on Mayor West and sees him dating his young intern: Meg.

Disc 3

“Peterotica”: First off, that Quagmire stuff in the beginning is very annoying. Anyway, Peter writes erotic novels and uses Lois’s father’s name as the publishing company. When someone gets into a car accident listening to Peter’s book on tape (read by Betty White), Mr. Pewterschmidt loses everything and must proceed in with the Griffins.

“You May Now Kiss the…Uh…Guy Who Receives”: (You secure it? Hahaha) . Brian’s overjoyed cousin Jasper plans on marrying his partner but Brian first must fight Mayor Wests’ ban on blissful marriage.

“Petergeist”: Peter digs in the yard and finds an Indian skull and peculiar things originate to happen. Share of the site is similar to that Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors where a 3D Homer is stuck in another dimension.

“The Griffin Family History”: The Griffins are stuck in a alarm room while their house is being robbed so Peter tells them stories of his ancestors Nate the slave, Willie “Black-Eyed” Griffin the restful comedy star, and Peter H*tler who was the brother of…yeah.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of this collection since the slay of the 3rd volume. But instead of dead you with all my details here it is, my review.

I received this edition for Christmas, actually, I received the Target Collector’s Edition. With this edition (along with the DVD’s) comes a book of Artist Series Postcards containing pictures of Peter, Quagmire, 2 of Brian, 2 of Stewie, a postcard of Peter and Brian, and a postcard featuring Meg. This edition also comes with 3 storyboard cards, one from each of the 3 previously released volumes (”If I’m Dyin’ I’m Lyin’” from Volume 1; “Lethal Weapons” from Volume 2, and “North by North Quahog” from Volume 3) .

The edition also contains the uncernsored tracks to five of the episodes, though there isn’t really considerable inequity in adding those tracks in my concept. Was a small surprised to hear the F-word a couple of times, but that was all.

Disc 1:

PTV: Television has been heavily censored by the FCC, Peter takes action by performing his hold “as nature intended” channel. This leads the FCC to capture more drastic action censoring the people of Quahog themselves.

Brian Goes Help to College: After being snubbed by the staff of The Novel Yorker for not graduating, Brian returns to college to bag his degree. All the while, Peter, Joe, Cleveland, and Quagmire, develop the “novel” A-Team.

The Courtship of Stewie’s Father: Chris breaks one of archaic man Herbert’s windows and must do chores in order to pay succor his debt. Stewie and Peter launch hanging out with each other doing their most common activity, tormenting Lois.

The Bulky Guy Strangler: Lois finds out that she has a long lost brother living in an insane asylum, but is petrified by his frightened past. Peter creates the NAAFP (Natinal Association for the Advancement of Full People) .

The Father The Son, and The Holy Fonz: Peter’s devout Catholic father returns for a visit and Peter decides to execute his acquire religion for worshippers of “The Fonz”.

Disc 2:

Brian Sings and Swings: Following a car accident, Briand falls into a deep depression, but is expeditiously brought out of it by meeting and singing with Frank Sinatra Jr in a local nightclub.

Patriot Games: During his 25-year high school reunion, Peter meets Patriots QB Tom Brady who recruits Peter for the team because of his runing skills.

Petergeist: Peter disturbs an stale burial station in an attempt to one-up Joe after he gets his modern home theater system. The spirit of the humdrum indian leader then wreaks havoc on the Griffin family.

The Griffin Family History: After burglars smash into the Griffin house, the family hides in a apprehension room. Now faced with imminent death, Peter retells the history of the family in their last hours of life.

And that’s all of the episodes that approach along with this volume. However, with my edition, I received a special bonus disc with a sneak seek at Seth Macfarlane’s modern note “The Winner”. It also contains an episode of American Dad: Roger ‘N’ Me.

I really enjoyed this volume of Family Guy and gape forward to more seasons from this gargantuan display.

Robert Ballard who has done similar work on the Bismark and the Ample sets his sights on the USS Yorktown which was lost in the final hours of the Battle of Midway, June 1942. He brings along members of the Yorktown crew and members of one of the Japanese carriers also sunk in the battle. The initial search for the Japanese carrier is hampered by foul equiptment. Finally giving up Ballard moves on to the Yorktown. He is successful in finding the ship. The pictures of the Yorktown are extraordinary. The program is in documentary format, going wait on and forth from a history of the battle, a history of the passengers, to the unique day attempt to locate the ships.

Anyone involved in WW2, Naval history, Ocean exploration, or human interest stories will come by this program exciting.

The DVD also contains added extras of pictures and another program which earn it worth the impress.

The Battle for Midway is an top-notch documentary. Inter-woven in the account of the modern-day search for the sunken carriers USS Yorktown and the Japanese Kagi are the stories of veterans who lived through it and the military strategies tedious one of the most primary turning points of World War II. The most compelling allotment of the documentary for me, however, is the constant reminder of the abominable note of our freedom we delight in today. In one day alone over 1,400 young men gave their lives in the Battle for Midway. The film does an superb job of portraying what was asked of an extrodinary generation of young men and women from around the world. The cost was expansive and this film is a fine reminder of that and in my belief should be mandatory viewing in high school history classes.

It’s unhappy that we don’t have film of Jung earlier in life. What is presented in this documentary is primarily interviews with those who knew or worked with Jung and those individuals interviewed such as Marie-Louise Von Franz, Laurens Van Der Post and Aniela Jaffe are quite venerable as they search their memories to give us a witness into the persona of the big psychoanalysist.

Be that as it may, this is a unbelievable DVD and a must for those devotees of Carl Jung. There is a gargantuan deal of insight into the person of Jung provided by those who knew and loved him the most. When you listen to these interviews peruse the numerous accounts that attest to uncanny insight or foreknowledge exhibited by the mysterious Dr. Jung. Something more was going on than fair insight. There is also footage of a astonishing interview with him gradual in life that allows you to experience the man firsthand. That alone makes this DVD documentary a worthwhile take.

The movie, after starting off listless, was quickly paced and quite suspenseful. The movie payed homage to archaic scare classics such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the slaughterhouse), Friday The 13th Share 2 and The Town That Dreaded Sundown (the sack head), A Nightmare On Elm Street (green and red walls in the slaughterhouse), and Sleepaway Camp (bug tape) . You can explain that Stevan Mena is a expansive fan of the genre classics.

The killer reminded me more of Jason in Friday The 13th fraction 2 with his mannerisms. He stalked and he hunted like Jason. There are also a few scenes that to me seemed like carbon copies of scenes in Friday The 13th Share 2. The acting, in my view, was also dead-on along with the directing.

The movie needed more blood and gore. It needed more killing. The whole bank robbery and ‘up to the bank robbery’ scenes were impartial too grand. It slowed the movie down alot, and really had no significance to the trusty dwelling.

The movie was fresh in alot of ways, but the homage was a bit overdone in a few scenes. It seemed like a friday The 13th Portion 2 remake in some of the scenes. I did like that, but when it comes down to it, they left a shrimp sour taste in my mouth.

This movie was so hyped prior to it’s release. By watching trailers and checking the website periodically I was so anxious to leer it. It’s dark to say that when I did collect around to study it that I was severely let down. I am not saying the movie sucked, it did not, but it was scheme to dumb. I rep myself trying to observe it and I can’t and if I do I bump it up a few chapters to catch to the share where the movie starts go race up.

But, I really liked the killer, and the legend gradual him. I liked the references to fright classics, and I liked the soundtrack.

There were hints of a sequel, and I would really like to discover it. Hopefully they can fix the mistakes they made in this one and improve.

If I’m not incorrect, this movie was released straight-to-video. I’ve never seen a s-2-v movie I liked, so I’m not definite why I opinion this would be an exception. I had read an extremely incorrect synopsis on the internet for this movie, but it had sounded gracious so I rented it. This movie is dreadful. I’ve seen a lot of unpleasant theatrical alarm films, this movie doesn’t even deserve a theatrical release. But, I must admit. It had a few proper elements (hence, my 2 stars) . The music (quiet by writer & director Stevan Mena) is really honorable, like “Halloween” & “Friday the 13th” estimable. Some of the uses of the music during scenes where the killer appears are beautiful effective. But this movie sucked from the beginning. It begins with a microscopic kid (who we’ve already seen has been missing) watching a man ruin a young girl in a basement/torture chamber. Then 10 years later, we meets Kurt (Richard Glover), Marilyn (Heather Magee), Max (Keith Chambers), and Julian

(Brandon Johnson) . Marilyn and Max are siblings. Marilyn and Julian are lovers. They four belief to prefer a bank and after they do (apparently the budget wasn’t ample enough to film the robbery) Max is slow and Kurt is heading to the meeting plot, a secluded “deserted” house in the middle of nowhere.

When Max was shot, I was compelled to write a thank-you label to the writer,

because Keith Chambers is one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen. This man should be shot. Anyway, as Marilyn and Julian cessation to bury Max’s body. Kurt drives to the house when his tire blows. Kurt (dressed in the same jumpsuit he robbed the bank in and holding two bags of cash…What a dull a$$) jacks a car that contains a young mother named Samantha (Samantha Black) and her daughter Courtney (Courtney Bertolone) . Why does Samantha have a English accent? Anyway, Kurt takes the young mother and daughter to the house, when Courtney manages to elope. Kurt runs after her, leaving Samantha in the house. Kurt ends up at another house (the setting of the torture chamber) and is killed. The killer takes one of Kurt’s money bags and uses it as his veil. Marilyn and Julian then near at the meeting plot to secure Samantha and most of their money missing. Insert next cliche here. Anyway, at the ruin of the movie we collect out who the killer is. Never before have I known exactly what was going to happen before it did, writer Mena doesn’t even bother to add something in at the ruin to manufacture us go “wow, now that’s a twist.” Instead, after “discovering” the identity of the killer; we are given yet another “I saw it forty minutes ago” twist. I deem Stevan Mena should stick to scoring alarm films rather than writing them. Seriously, folks. Don’t end your time.

When I reviewed the previous Quickly Forward volume, I was relatively disappointed with how 4Kids had revamped the series to be lighter and funnier for the kiddies. Over time, I guess my attitude has softened. While Fleet Forward tranquil isn’t perfect, it’s a relatively bewitching diversion. This second batch of episodes are stronger than the first, with Cody finally confronting his disagreeable uncle and Shokonabo’s master conception coming to light. The Turtles graduate to the ninja level of Chunin, Torbin Zixx returns to play both sides, and ragged foes from the past capture revenge.

Really, I’m almost a tiny shadowy that Lickety-split Forward will be cancelled and retooled, presumably re-modeled after the successful TMNT cgi film. While a return to gloomy and gritty is better, the Expeditiously Forward belief was finally beginning to catch its groove. Hopefully the last episodes will be memorable, and leave Speedily Forward as more than a passing footnote in the Turtles’ history.

A lot of people have their gripes with TMNT: Quick Forward, but I personally always supported the change since the beginning.

This Second residence of 13 episodes has a stronger feel, and a powerful more progressive myth. Now that they have established a lot of the characters, they can clarify a bit more about them, or honest invent them further.

Some of the better episodes are “Head of Plot”, “DNA is Thicker than Water”, “Zixxth Sense” and of course “The Day of Awakening”. one of the best (and possibly the funniest) things I examine in these episodes is a particular Villain (not bishop) mild lives!

I say, if you are a TMNT fan through and through, and you like or have the first 13 episodes . . . do yourself a favor and hold this DVD situation! I am REALLY happy I did.

I must say I was extremely mad when I finally sat down to behold “Flavia the Heretic.” I first heard about the film years ago, abet when DVD was first coming out and the only plan to search for films like this was to choose massively expensive first hurry VHS tapes or improper quality dupes. The word on the street about Florinda Bolkan’s chronicle nunsploitation flick was uniformly profitable. Most reviewers commented on the bizarre gore sequences, sequences renown for being over the top in the brutality department. And since I enjoyed Bolkan’s peculiar performance as a tormented gypsy in Lucio Fulci’s giallo “Don’t Torture a Duckling,” I figured giving this film a stare was a no-brainer. Well, there is obedient and abominable with “Flavia the Heretic.” Bolkan’s turn as a tormented nun is quite obliging and well worth watching. Regrettably, the gore isn’t as disturbing as others said–at least not for me. Then again I’ve seen so many gore flicks that I’m probably jaded to most of this stuff. Whatever the case, “Flavia the Heretic” does succeed wildly on one primary point: the movie is far, FAR better than “The Other Hell,” hack director Bruno Mattei’s banal contribution to the nunsploitation genre.

Through the eyes of Flavia Gaetani (Bolkan) we learn that fifteenth century Italy is not an amenable site for a young woman. The problems launch when young Flavia witnesses the aftermath of a battle between Muslim invaders and her father’s military forces. A wounded soldier has the temerity to accomplish discover contact with the young girl, even smiles at her, before Flavia’s father sees the two looking at each other and murders the Muslim in a fit of rage. “Flavia the Heretic” is a movie a feminist scholar would probably like to analyze in an article. Most films in this genre would ramp up the gore and nudity in lieu of any meaningful themes. Not so “Flavia the Heretic”; this film spends nearly all its time discussing how women’s subservience to men is an unacceptable standard by which to live let alone function as a healthy human being. The gore is almost an afterthought, as though the writer and director decided to throw in some nauseating scenes in an attempt to intention in the blood and carnage crowd. Don’t acquire me wrong: the gory stuff witnessed by Flavia does occasionally merit a wince. Check out the scene where our heroine’s dad tortures that nun, for example. I composed can’t maintain he…well, gaze and contemplate for yourself. It’s quite warped, though. Unprejudiced as repugnant is what happens to Flavia after the Church and the locals reestablish control when the Muslims retreat. We only witness what happens to her for a second or two, but the understanding of the authorities executing a person in such a grotesque manner might send a few people running for the bathroom. Although parts of the movie are ridiculous… Sister Agatha talking about taking over the empty Vatican… there is a legitimately beneficial movie under the surface of dreadful dubbing and the exploitation categorization. The movie is about femenism and its success being linked completely to the time. Flavia could not free the women from the oppressive hands of men. Some of the monologues sound ridiculous, but nothing that is said is so extrodinary, no, it is the the time and state things are said that beget them seem so out of site. Whether many of the analytical aspects of the movie were intentional is up to debate, but fair by watching the film, there is a lot that is beneath the surface.

The Dream Team is unprejudiced another one of those killer comedies that no one went to gawk when it was originally released, but has now found a nice following on home video. I actually saw the film in theaters and understanding it was hands down the funniest movie of the year!

First you have a sizable comedy ensemble who also can play drama impartial as effectively. And the comedy ensues! As the gang tries to figure out a arrangement to bag their doctor, they extinguish up finding “themselves” in the process. Add Lorraine Bracco (of “Goodfellas” and “The Sopranos” fame) as Keaton’s girlfriend (”So am I walking home with an escaped mental patient or what? “) and you know you’re space to have a noble time.

What makes the film memorable is that it has the perfect blend of laugh outloud humor (”We’re a special combat unit with the United States Marine Corps and we’ve been tracking some Libyan terrorists. So if you’re looking for a comedy that’s fat of ample laughs as well as a pleasurable narrative with some dramatic moments thrown in for honorable measure, bewitch up The Dream Team today. It’s the sanest choice to execute!

A side-splitting comedy about four mental patients: Michael Keaton as a habitual liar who has violent tendencies, Christopher Lloyd as an obsessive-compulsive who thinks he runs the hospital, Peter Boyle as a venerable advertising executive with a messiah complex who likes to consume his clothes off, and Stephen Furst as catatonic couch potato. Against the wishes of the hospital administration, their compassionate doctor takes the four patients to Unusual York City to examine a major league baseball game. When the van reaches the city, the doctor has to exit the van - with patients unruffled inside - only to see a cancel committed by two inferior cops. The doctor is attacked by the cops, leaving him hospitalized and unable to back his patients. The patients then earn themselves framed for the destroy. Now the patients have to not only act “sane” to indicate their innocence, they also have to achieve the life of their doctor who is calm a target of the two cops.

What makes this movie work is the relationship of the patients. It is so remarkable fun watching Keaton, Lloyd, and Boyle bicker all the time about the littlest things. Boyle has a really laughable scene in which he leaves the van while Lloyd tries to block him. Boyle then muscles his design past Lloyd, tells him that He shall have no fraudulent gods before Him, and finally he tells Lloyd to accept out his design before calling him a seven-letter word. There might only be so mighty you can do with a catatonic character, but Furst is quite memorable. Even though the doctor must have the patience of a saint when dealing with them, he probably has a harder time suppressing a laugh. I had the privilege of seeing this salubrious film last week at the AFI Silver Theater, which recently ran a month-long tribute to the tedious, spacious director Elia Kazan. Kazan is vital for his collaborations with a young Marlon Brando, directing the rising star in three films during the early 50s: “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Viva Zapata!” and the masterpiece “On the Waterfront.” Many film critics place “Baby Doll” honest leisurely “On the Waterfront” when ranking Kazan’s filmography. The owner of a private cotton gin, Archie Lee, has his hands rotund with “child bride” Baby Doll, who sleeps in a crib and won’t let her husband touch her until she turns 20. With her birthday in a few days, Baby Doll, played by the impossibly-cute Carroll Baker, is threatening to “preserve” unless her aging, doltish husband starts raking in the dough. After their furniture is hauled off, Lee, played by Karl Malden, sets fire to the modern cotton gin that’s been taking away his business. Silva Vaccaro, a firey Sicilian businessman played by Eli Wallach, vows to real revenge on the person who burned down his gin. Suspicions lead him directly to Lee’s doorstep where, over the course of an afternoon, he proceeds to waste the man’s life.

The heart of the movie is Vaccaro’s seduction of Baby Doll. No flesh is ever shown, nothing explicit is ever uttered and I occupy there’s only one kiss in the entire film. Regardless, this is some of the hottest, most erotic footage in American film. The dialogue, the acting, the device it’s directed: the overall do is like watching passionate sex, yet it’s simply two people talking - and they’re not even talking about sex! To me, this type of filmmaking is magical, when the director conjures something out of thin air that isn’t even there.

“Baby Doll” was highly, highly controversial upon its release in 1956. It was condemned by The Legion of Decency, an organization of the Roman Catholic Church, who claimed that it was improper. Because of the hype, it was withdrawn from over 70 percent of U.S. theaters before its premiere. Several film critics at the time called it the most pornographic film ever released by a film studio. Today however, very few would likely glean in a fuss over it.

“Baby Doll” is a mountainous film that now ranks among my favorites of all time. It’s not only sexy, but very humorous, well-acted, well-written and expertly directed. It may seem a puny dated to most original viewers, but I personally judge it holds up quite well (but then, I do behold a lot of worn films.) If and when “Baby Doll” is produced for DVD, I hope the studio considers Eli Wallach for the audio commentary.

This review isn’t of the titanic movies contained but the DVD place and their respective presentations.

first..let me say the bonus DVD “Tennesse Williams South”…is exceptional..its a film made about and with him in 1974 and besides his fill readings of his work, which are illuminating, it features legends like Burl Ives and Jessica Tandy re-creating his dialog..simply timeless!

now..onto the Discs/Movies

the bonus featurettes are all very well done however, seemingly shorter than they should/could be. By that I mean…they have unusual interviews with Karl Malden and Eli Wallach for BABYDOLL and Rip Torn for Sweet Bird of Youth and the ever resplendent Jill St John for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, and yet the amount of face time these genuine stars of the films in inquire of secure is barely a line here or there? Not that the featurettes aren’t marvelous…they are..it honest seems they could be a could 10minutes longer each…

now…the opposite dilemma is in the second disc of Streetcar Named Desire….the feature length (90min) Elia Kazan: A directors Skedaddle is incredible..its a decade or so dilapidated but was done while he was level-headed with us and his participation raised it above the level of talking heads documentaries of the day. The uncommon thing is that the modern featurettes on this disc feature plan too worthy culled from the aforementioned feature. I don’t understand….WB has unbelievable featurettes on all the movies that seem truncated and then BLOATS out the Streetcar featurettes with duplicate material from itself? Only the original footage of Karl Malden saves the Streetcar featurettes from their fill plagerism.

Now..the films themselves are all in very worthy shape considering they go support half a century. I wasn’t a particular fan of Tennesse Williams..but after viewing all these films and the bonus film…i most certainly set him in the genius category and am looking for more.

Also, the press is making a tall deal about Marlon Brando’s veil test which is being included in the Streetcar DVD bonus features…its only a curiosity, not extraordinary by any stretch. What is far more spirited is Karl Malden’s handsome memories of his friendship and admiration for Mr Brando….truly touching and mezmorizing. Malden is a care for of an actor who starred in more fair films than any but the most ardent fan would know as he was usually second billed…but he IS the star of this area.

Great American films and unlike Universals shameless packaging..WB continues to explain these types of films lovingly with extras..oh yeah..and the commentaries aren’t abominable either…considerable to savor in this status.

For several years, I stayed up well past 2am on Saturday nights hoping to score reruns of the classic, tubby SNL shows from 1975-1980. NBC was re-airing some of these broad programs in their entirety (not “best of” packages) with few exceptions, starting in the leisurely 1990s in most NBC outlets. Unfortunately, the fresh cast shows were the exception and the Dana Carvey and/or Will Farrell years were the norm. After several years, I managed to videotape about 25-30 new cast shows, but only about 4 from the first season.

Younger audiences unusual with the unique SNL will likely be surprised by a number of things in viewing this substantial collection. Firstly, for those of us who remember, SNL was the most unfamiliar and cutting-edge note to be found in those days. The belief of “gradual night” television was certainly not then what it is today either. There really is no “unhurried night” anymore, what with hundreds of cable/satellite channels and the Internet to retain us entertained around the clock. In the ’70s, however, slack night was a wasteland of traditional movies and reruns. Most stations ended their broadcast day by about 1 or 2am (for the tech-geners, this means the three network stations, one public status and typically about 3 or 4 local stations) . As far as the networks were concerned, Johnny Carson owned the airways after the local news; this was literally factual in many ways. Although not on air during the weekend, Carson Productions was quite a mighty entity, owning many weekend program slots. Beyond local news & the Tonight Indicate, there was itsy-bitsy interest in developing a “behind night” program. Secondly, SNL had ample shock value for a culture that wasn’t traditional to seeing risqué material paraded constantly on broadcast TV. For that stuff, most of us had to go to the movies for “un-edited” material. VCRs were not yet in every household and cable was only available in cramped format in markets like Unusual York. In the culture that was then, SNL’s impact was gargantuan, providing important “water cooler” chat on Monday morning. It was what people stayed home for on Saturday nights. It was really the only “hip” exhibit on TV.

The Not Ready for Primetime Players were a product of the counterculture 1960s. Noteworthy of their humor - especially the now surprising amount of drug references - will seem not only brazenly un-PC (thank heaven!), but incredibly raw for those mature to the, ironically, structured and institution-ized nature of the point to today. The cast themselves were not considered as the main intention, amazingly enough, and their presence in the first few shows is remarkably sparse. In fact, the second episode is largely music-oriented. Many creative techniques were tried, and some fail miserably. Recognize how poorly Abba (although a edifying performance) are incorporated into an already-in-progress Robert Klein skit. DU ER IKKE ALENE (You Are Not Alone) is a 1978 Danish landmark film written by Lasse Nielsen and Crooked Petersen and directed by Nielsen and Ernst Johansen. Kim (Peter Bjerg) is a young prepuberal youth living with his parents: his father (Ove Sprogøe) is headmaster of a boys’ school and his mother (Elin Reimer) is in line with the father’s hardline standards. Though not a student in the school, Kim does associate with the young high school age boys and finds one lad in particular, Bo (Anders Agensø), a role model who shows pains for Kim and with whom Kim bonds, emotionally and eventually physically. The manner in which this occurs is never acted out but merely suggested in the most discreet and resplendent draw. But we explore as this bond develops more strongly, with each of the boys nascent to the plot in which they procure themselves.

The classmates are a varied group - normal kids in a normal school plot - until one of the boys Ole (Ole Meyer), who is somewhat of a trouble-maker, posts magazine pictures of nude women in his dorm room. Reprimanded by the headmaster he is achieve on probation and when he ultimately posts the contraband pictures in the dorm restroom, he is threatened with expulsion. His classmates band together to protect him and Ole is maintained in the school.

Other sidebar stories that pepper the veil are swimming hole escapades where the injury of one of the boys calls forth the empathy of the entire class; there is a vignette where an older woman tries to deliver one of the boys the beauties of physical love; there is a shower scene that finds Bo and Kim gently observing each other; and there is a class project for graduation that is supposed to be an enactment of the 10 Commandments, one episode of which is assigned to a student filmmaker.

It is this finished class project film, shown before the faculty and the parents, that is based on the commandment ‘Love thy neighbor’ and it is a beautifully wrought scene of Bo and Kim embracing and kissing in one of the more objective and sensitive moments on film. The ‘non-story’ film ends without an audience response: it simply fades away to a tune that speaks of ‘You are not alone - there is someone like you ahead.’ No, this is not a film about nudity or raw sex. Instead this film is a intrepid exploration of the normal period in growth when boys search for role models and score their first sensations of care for emerging. Like so many films that have “blissful” themes, this film is wrongly seen by some as a homosexual “coming of age” yarn. But it is not that simple. As shown very realistically in this splendid movie, there is a lot of confusion among kids–and maybe there is more today than there was in the behind ’70s when this movie was made. Anyone who ever suffered from that confusion, whether arising from sexual, social, or other anxieties, will bask in this film. It truly has a small of everything.

Is it a puny too “erotic” for American sensibilities? Maybe, but those who are realistic about sexual experimentation will not have any problems with the very tastefully suggestive depictions of that. The young actors, male and female, are charming and convincing.

And there are brief adventures of the kind that typically occur in boarding schools and novels or films about them. But they are done

well and also snarl something of a “European” conception of how various crises and problems in this kind of setting might be handled.

Grady Harp’s review is correct on target. The two protagonists, Kim and Bo, picture not necessarily glad kids, but any kids who are lonely, confused, alienated, and yearning for esteem and acceptance. They could be “geeks” or any other minority. And the depictions of “bullying” in schools and other settings, in a film from over twenty-five years ago, are eerily prescient.

But there are also many scenes of belief and solidarity among the kids that are heart-warming. The final scene is really spirited, especially when you understand that the whole school is tedious it.

It’s too terrible that the DVD release does not offer many “extras”, but it’s a bargain.

I even like the “pop” music.
